Summary - The data in the electronic tachograph records (ETR) constitute an important source of information necessary to improve railway operation both from the point of view of reliability and safety. The study of this massive amount of data may appear difficult and ineffective if proper analysis software is not available. Unfortunately, the introduction of ETR analysis software is often precluded by the existence of various formats in the data strings due to the absence of standardisation rules between the different manufacturers of the event recording device. This article describes how the problem of standardisation of data and their reading and massive analysis has been addressed in Ferrotramviaria, thus obtaining important benefits on the control of problems and on the improvement of maintenance of on-board and ground subsystems.
