Urban mobility by ropeways: their climate footprint

Summary -The article presents an attempt to evaluate the carbon footprint of urban cable cars on the example of the established urban cable car transport system in the city of La Paz, Bolivia, using the scientific method of evaluating the entire life cycle of transport systems. The existing research is upgraded with the assessment of the environmental impact of the CableSmart. It was found that cable cars generate a significantly smaller carbon footprint compared to small and large buses and compared to trams. As cableway devices also depend on the availability of energy in existing electrical networks, the contribution of innovative approaches leading to various hybrid solutions (such as CableSmart technology) is very important.
