Summary - Based on a historical-technical course, analyses are provided for an estimate of the relationship be- tween track gauge width and wear effects on the wheels of rolling stock. The gauge, in fact, by determining different set-ups of the bogie, involves different configurations of the flange thrust and, consequently, the extent of alternative wear. In particular, an investigation is carried out on what may be the consequences on the wear of the flanges of nor- mal gauge maintenance even in narrow radius curves.
The calculation procedures, based on the classic meth- ods of Locomotion Mechanics - but certainly extendable to more advanced procedures - lead to results worthy of fur- ther development.
