Summary - This document illustrates a solution which, by integrating easily with an Axle Counter Block (BCA) system in a SIL 4-certifiable and cost-effective manner, enables the monitoring of rail electrical continuity, in analogy to the function performed by track circuits with impressed currents, where the loss of such continuity is interpreted as the presence of rolling stock within the controlled section. This study, carried out under a framework agreement between the University of Tor Vergata and RFI, included a review of the state of the art and the identification of other possible technical solutions. It was jointly decided to further investigate the solution presented here. Simulations were also agreed upon and performed, later experimentally validated on the RFI test track at San Donato, with the aim of defining the reasonable dimensional limits of the sections that can be monitored by the proposed system.
