Summary - Within the era of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) there is a cross fertilization between railway engineering and Information Technology, which requires the utilization of vertically integrated knowledge overtak- ing the paradigms of the classical engineering. The avail- ability of innovative technologies and huge amount of da- ta are the key factors able to revolutionize maintenance in the 21st century. Thanks to the vertically integrated devel- opment of IP smart sensors, computational performances, Big Data and analytics frameworks, the rail transport is made more punctual, cost-efficient and safer. This paper provides a brief introduction to the predictive maintenance within the rail sector, emphasizing railway engineering ele- ments, Information Technology and data mining aspects, and business implications obtainable through this innova- tive framework.
