Summary- The expansion of night train services in Italy present an opportunity for long-distance travel, both domestic and international. This study examines the feasibility of a national overnight service along the North-South axis, as well as the potential reinstatement of the «motorail » service, discontinued by Trenitalia in 2011. A multinomial Logit model of modal choice was developed to analyze demand, talking to account factors such as travel comfort. A survey of over 800 respondents revealed strong tourist interest in a high-quality night train service. The application of the model enabled the estimation of passenger volumes on the proposed routes. The research also identifies the infrastructure and service requirements needed to activate the connections, including terminal and onboard interventions. Finally, the economic analysis highlights costs and benefits, outlining opportunities and challenges for interested railway operators.
