The ETCS technology-based train spacing
system adopted in the Italian HS/HC railway lines is a
key element both for safety and regularity of train running.
Its failure as a consequence of any kind of reason
would cause the stopping of all the trains running in its jurisdiction
area. This memoir intends to propose an analytical
evaluation of the improvement in the RAM parameters
of the concentrated ETCS trackside subsystem (Radio
Block Center) achieved with the introduction of a backup
apparatus. It is even hereby presented a personal interpretation
of the “minor failure” according to the specifications
in references [1] and [3]. This back-up RBC has even
represented a temporary solution for the verification of
the line sections Novara-Milano and Gricignano-Napoli
leading RFI to use the “Mirror” system configuration for
the tests preceding the final activation.
