Summary - The estimate of the local public transport (LPT) standard cost is a topic of great interest in countries that subsidise these services with public resources, as it is essential to regulate the economic relations between the entrusting authority and the entrusted company but also to guarantee a fair distribution of the specific state resources among the competent local authorities. The subject has been addressed by some scholars who have produced estimation models supported by more or less complex mathematical relations, dependent on variables of a different nature.
This work illustrates the major results in the scientific literature and emphasises the interpretative capacity of each proposed model, assessed through the representativeness of the variables used and the calibration parameters. In particular, for each model, the variables on which it is based, the methodological approach and analytical form, the breadth and value of the reference sample are discussed, and its strengths and limitations are highlighted. The aim of this work is to systematise current knowledge on models for estimating the cost of LPT services by road, providing indications for future research with particular attention to the importance of the variables to be considered.
