The study starts from the applications of
tracking to the freight transport and faces the contribution
to the inter-modality of the real time load units identification.
The main problems hindering the effective development
of intermodal transport are identified and tackled by
means of operational proposals simulated by an original
model, tuned and validated on the Rivalta Scrivia freight
village and its integrated operation with the maritime container
terminal in Genoa Voltri. The results allow the model
validation and provide with interesting operational suggestion
of wide applicability concerning operational and technological
measures to increase the effectiveness of freight
villages and port - inland terminal integrated systems;
moreover, the most promising application areas for these
integrated systems in Italy are identified.
